Red Beard

Red Beard (Akahige) is a towering masterpiece of Janapese film -- many believe it is Kurosawa's finest work. That it deals with Medicine is an extra plus.

From Netflix: "A testament to the goodness of humankind, Akira Kurosawa's Red Beard (Akahige) chronicles the tumultuous relationship between an arrogant young doctor and a compassionate clinic director. Toshiro Mifune, in his last role for Kurosawa, gives a powerhouse performance as the dignified yet passionate director who guides his embittered intern to maturity, teaching him to appreciate the lives of his destitute patients."

Another amazing Kurosawa film (one of the greatest or certainly 100 greatest films of all time) is "Ikiru" with Takashi Shimura in lead role. It's about an anonymous civil servant who learns he has terminal cancer and decides to break from convention within the rigid bureaucracy of Japan and from his own predcitable self to make a small difference in the lives of others.I won't spoit it beyond that.Beautifully hot and done with such pathos it is a universal film about meaning.Shimura was the wise mature Samurai in "Seven Samurai".Though Mifune was the most famous of the actors that Kurosawa worked with his own personal favorite actor was in fact Shimura would was in a number of his films.
